90 Miles To Havana (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

This is the story of the Cuban Revolution, told by Julian, a young boy. It begins when Julian and his family are on the island as the revolution begins and it describes how things quickly go from bad to worse. His parents have made the heart-wrenching decision to send Julian and his brothers to the United States on Operation Peter Pan, where the Catholic Church provided care for these children. The brothers learn that they have to stick together in order to survive in their new homeland as they encounter tough situations. This would be a great addition to a study of this time period in history. Great book about a family from Cuba during set in the 60’s during a Cuban revolution. It walks the reader through their lives and history, well. The parents decide to send the 3 boys to Florida to wait until the parents could safely get them out--operation Pedro Pan. The boys are sent to a camp for children with little adult supervision and a bully from their old life to terrorize the kids. Lots of the book is about dealing with the bully, and the last is about Julian (who-li-an) who is separated from his big brothers and has to make decisions on his own—a great adventure. Good coming of age bk.

What do You think about 90 Miles To Havana (2010)?

This is a reasonable story--too happy an ending, but delineates an event that happened.
