He resolves to stake half his fortune on a couple of turns of the roulette wheel and, to his agent's disgust, write a novel – about death. Set on a train, his manuscript involves characters debating the nature of consciousness. When the fictional train gets stuck, Charlie becomes more deeply entangled with the dangerous young woman he met in the casino.
