Maybe a solid 1 and a quarter stars is really adequate. Really wanted to like this book but the narrative wasn't very fluid. A lot of the dramaturgy was forced and just didn't mesh well with the story. There were highlights and narratives about characters that made no sense to the overall web of the story. While I did like a lot of the magical realism that is incorporated throughout the story (i.e. spirits and incarnation) the tale of the families over decades in Money, Mississippi is lacking something. I was cheering for the author with the hopes that things would fall into place by the end, but sadly they didn't for this reader. The story takes place in Money, Mississippi and is narrated in the words of this small town. From the town's perspective, the years of racism and townlore are woven into a story of ghosts and long-lost love. The author presents reality/fantasy, hate/love and past/present to weave a story whose most enjoyable character is a devilish spirit who alternates residence among several of the story's characters. The author creates a wonderful, troubling story for those of us who enjoy the supernatural intertwined with southern history.
