A ride in a tractor-pulled wagon out to the middle of the pumpkin field, this time, where the ground was littered with enormous orange blobs. Tyler couldn’t lift the one he chose, while Abby enjoyed rolling hers along the ground. After they’d loaded the four pumpkins into the car—three for jack-o’-lanterns and one for pie, they decided—there was a hay-filled barn for the children to play in, and it was sheltered and warmer and great fun. Until the dust from the hay got in their noses and they all began to sneeze. “Is this our cue to go home?” MJ asked, and he had that look in his eye that Alicia recognized—the restless one that said he was itching to pull out his phone and call the office or the hospital, because living life at a preschooler level was driving him nuts.
