I managed to explain matters more clearly than Dale had, although this was hardly useful at first, since the maidservant only wailed the louder while Mistress Macnab, after listening to me with her mouth open, lost her businesslike air in an even noisier outburst of wild and tearful lamentations. However, some sort of order was presently restored. Mistress Macnab regained a white-faced but resolute command of herself, hushed the maidservant at last, and led her down to the kitchen.
