A Vow Of Sanctity (1993) - Plot & Excerpts

Sister Joan has gone on a retreat to Loch Morag in Scotland. The retreat consists of a cave up a steep hill but it is peaceful and she is made welcome by the monks of the nearby monastery and is ferried across the Loch to the monastery by the engaging Brother Cuthbert. Sister Joan wants to make progress in her spiritual life and needs peace and quiet to do this but it soon becomes clear that people, after an initial reluctance, want to talk to her. Six years ago one person died and one person disappeared and why is there an apparently modern body slowly mummifying in the crypt at the monastery? It is not long before Sister Joan is much more involved in the mysteries of Loch Morag than she actually wants to be and her spiritual life is having to take a back seat as is her painting. I enjoyed this well plotted mystery with its many strands. It has very dark strands to it which give the reader pause for thought.Sister Joan is an interesting person – battling with the demands of the religious life but still managing to maintain her own individuality. The religious aspects of this series are not overdone and they are a vital part of Sister Joan herself as a character. This is really the third book in the series as it comes between ‘Vow of Chastity’ and ‘Vow of Obedience’ in chronological order though it seems to be listed as the fourth book in the series. It can actually be read as a standalone book as none of the series characters apart from Sister Joan appear in it.
