Lauren had agreed to date me and my best friend, after telling me she loved me. I couldn't say I wasn't a little surprised. I'd wanted her to protest and say no to the whole thing, but she hadn't. Now we were starting from scratch, or so we said. After the weeks spent with Lauren I, without a doubt, knew her better than Caleb, and I cared about her more than him. Regardless of how I felt about her, it must not have been enough for her to forget about him. The next day I was glad to be going home from the hospital and sleeping in my own bed, but I was nervous about the possibility I might be sleeping alone. I settled in on the couch in our living room, embarrassingly exhausted from the walk up the sidewalk to get into the house. Lauren picked up Chinese food for dinner, and the three of us ate in silence. The same thing was on everyone's mind, and I hadn't missed Caleb's blatant attempts at flirting with Lauren every chance he got. By ten that night I already knew her decision by the way she looked at him, and it stung worse than two bullets.
