Joseph immediately sobered. “Something’s wrong,” he said to Priscilla through the downpour as Jude flung the reins over a bush and frantically climbed the steps to them. “It’s Mary,” Jude shouted. “She dropped Hollie off at the schoolhouse and I thought she looked pale, but when I got home for lunch, she was lying on the bed in terrible pain . . . there was blood.” He moved to brush past them. “I need Grossmudder May.”
