At The End - A Post-apocalyptic Novel (The Road To Extinction, Book 1) - Plot & Excerpts
That’s how hard he held me. My head rested against his chest. For a while, I just listened to the ba-bump-ba-bump of his heart. This was my first time hearing it: it was the best sound in the world. It was so dark, and I was so relaxed, I wanted to fall asleep, but my mind jumped around as if I had had three cups of coffee. I looked up at Tortilla. He was so peaceful, so incredibly peaceful. Well, I don’t know if I saw him, or if I saw what I wanted to see. I couldn’t see Jelly across from us. I was glad. I was glad he couldn’t see us together. He would hate it. I scanned towards the door: there was nothing but blackness. It held, solid. That’s why they had named it the Apocalypse Room. I wondered if it did anyone else any good. The alions took people so fast, and who knew how they did it; I certainly didn’t. Finally, I let Tortilla’s warmth overwhelm me. It soothed me into sleep, and there I stayed, probably for the rest of my life. I rolled over, startled. I thought I had heard a roar.
