Baci Da 100 Dollari (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

An interesting collection of short stories from Kurt Vonnegut in his early days. At times the stories are a little moralistic and heavy-handed but this is likely the result of the fact that they were originally intended for publication in magazines, and who doesn't like a good moral there? Vonnegut does a masterful job of describing bright, colourful characters quickly, and occasionally throwing in a fun twist at the end that you don't see coming. Overall I'd have to say my favourite story was the last one in the collection-- it details the artistic duel between a realist painter, and an abstract artist tasked with painting in each other's style, overall this book is a fun read. Edgar Allen Poe, master of the short story believed that a reader should have the opportunity to read a complete story in one sitting. Those of us blessed with a short attention span would agree. Thus my choice of reading a collection of short stories this time. I had read several of Kurt Vonegut's novels and was curious to read a series of previously unpublished short stories. While satire dominates the tone of Vonegut's novels, I found a different side to the author in the short stories. Subjects of the stories vary, most are filled with irony, however, they also include a morality and more caring side of the author that I hadn't experienced when I read the novels. I really enjoyed the short stories and would highly recommend them.

What do You think about Baci Da 100 Dollari (2011)?

This collection of short stories is a lot simpler than Vonnegut's novel length works but they are still first rate and a pleasure to read. Vonnegut wrote these for magazines because he needed a quick pay day. At the time, he had kids of his own and taken in more after the sudden death of his sister. These stories are mouse trap stories in which he paints a clever picture and there's a punch at the end: either a denouement or a lesson to be learned. When you take into account how quickly these stories were turned out, and the audience that it was intended for, you quickly forgive Vonnegut for the lack of complexity and enjoy them for what they are: clever stories that still contain his inimitable writing style.
