I've only read a few books by Avi, but I've loved every one. Talk about someone who has a way with words! This author is able to paint realistic pictures of humans and their sufferings. Sad, gripping, and beautiful the story of an immigrant family in New York in the nineteenth-century will keep you reading to the very end. It's not often I stay up until 1 in the morning for anything, but it was well worth it to finish this amazing story!Highly recommended for anyone who loves a good story! This book was recommended to me by my niece. I think, as with most of Avi's books, that it is well written and insightful. Like other reviewers I found it a bit slow at the beginning but got into wanting to know what would happen next with Maks and Willa. I find myself wanting to know more about the Pinkerton Detective Agency and Donck. I liked the author's notes at the end of the book and appreciated his bibliography as suggestions for further reading
I really enjoyed the authentic historical setting of 1890s New York immigrant life.
