Constable & Toop (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

I am giving this book a 4 out of 5 because there is no way to give half amounts. For me, I feel as though it was a strong 3.5. While the entire premise of the story was incredibly interesting, something was lost by having chapters that were only a few pages long. The introductions to the characters did not seem as fleshed out as they could have been and it took a little while to understand what exactly was happening in the story. Once this happened, however, it was rather easy to follow and read.I personally feel as though this is one of those books where the story could have been condensed into a book that was half of this size through editing out much of the middle portion where not much seemed to be happening. It became a bit boring at points, but the last hundred or so pages brought everything together and were the most interesting. I just wish it developed into that sooner rather than later. In my opinion, this book is not appropriate for children. I found this book in the children's section at the library. It had several scenes of graphic violence. And just because most of the victims of described torture were ghosts and not physically human, doesn't suddenly make it okay to include in a book peddled to such a young audience. Multiple murders were the main focus of this story. I just kept thinking that if this were made into a movie there was no way it could ever be rated as innocently as PG. Whatever happened to bumbling bad guys that we can't quite take seriously? Why are we selling books to children with the most evil characters we can devise? As an adult reading this, I will say it was well written. The quality of writing brought it up to three stars.

Wrapped up a little too neatly, but I liked it overall.
