Dark Between The Stars, The (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
I've read the Hellhole books that Kevin J. Anderson Co - write with Brian Herbert. They were to date the best sci-fi books I had ever read. The Dark Between The Stars rates up there with them. Each chapter is written about a particular recurring character and what is happening to them at this point in time. At the start they seem separate and disconnected, but towards the end it all comes together. The book is the first of a new trilogy which follows The Saga of Seven Suns, which I have not read. Kevin makes mention of the Saga throughout this book, but it is not necessary to have read the Saga before embarking on this series.I highly recommend this book and can't wait for book 2. Oh, and I'll be hunting down the Saga of Seven Suns too. The first volume in a trilogy that's a sequel to Anderson's The Saga of the Seven Suns. I'd read the first book in that series when it first came out, but got no further; so, this was all essentially new to me. I had no problem entering this story and didn't feel as if I was missing out on information from that earlier saga. There are two races in the galaxy: the humans and the Ildirans. They are still adjusting working together after defeating their joit enemies in the Saga of the Seven Suns. Two enemies from the past return to wreck havoc among them, and they seem to be facing dangers at every turn. The plot is that simple, but with the many characters and points of view that Anderson employs, this becomes a true space epic. There's a little bit of everything in this (Star Trek, Star Wars, Dune, X-Files, etc.), but Anderson makes it very enjoyable and entertaining. I was disappointed when it ended, and am looking forward to the next installment, due in 2015. If you want something familiar, yet new, and full of wonder without being beaten down by dystopias, this is for you.
