Das Haus Am Mississippi River: Roman (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
To me this novel is the epitome of Southern fiction. A coming of age story during the civil rights unrest in the sixties, of a young twelve year old girl is dropped off at her grandmother's house, a woman she has never met. Fannie, her grandmother lives in an old three story house that has seen better days. Queenie, her maid and Queenie's daughter, Dollbaby are part of the household. Mysteries, secrets are part of Ibby's growing up there. Bit by bit, the whole story comes out. This is a book that according to the reviews I have seen is one that you will either love or hate. I loved it and finished it in one day. I felt that the end was redeeming for all the characters. Really really good. Sort of reminiscent of the Help, To Kill a Mockingbird and Saving Cee Cee Honeycutt. Had bits and pieces of all those stories but was also very much it's own. Most every character in this book was lovable. Queenie and Dollbaby and Fannie and Ibby. Can't forget about Birdelia (love her name) and T-Bone and Crow. Really wonderful people with a lot of heartache in their lives but people who rose above and woke up everyday and just kept on going. If you need a pick me up or your faith in humanity restored a bit, pick this book up. Some parts are sad yes, but the wonderful characters will make you smile and make you happy. One of my favorites surprises was the word of the day. It was only a little detail in the book and no fuss was made over it, but the revelation made me smile and made me proud of Queenie. That part genuinely surprised me and made me happy.
