De 100-jarige Man Die Uit Het Raam Klom En Verdween (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

This seems to be a bit of a marmite book. I loved it, but then I am quite content with odd humour. The book is pretty much what it says on the cover. The protagonist simply abandons his 100 th birthday party ( as I think I might hope to, also) and life seems to set about continuing that he adventure he has had all of his life. You find out about this as you progress through the book. I suppose that there are some slight parallels with Forest Gump, but nothing to get concerned about. Lovely book. Have bought it for friends. I loved this book. The best way to describe it is a cross between "Catch me if You Can" and "Forest Gump". A very apt description. As I liked both movies I do like this. Maybe a tad long, but good the entire way through. The main character is somewhat of an enigma, as at the beginning of the book he is committed to an institution as having some mental faculty issues. So, I did have a number of times throughout the book of having to figure out if he did have actual issues, or was just somewhat eccentric. Some of my favorite quotations include:“Never try to out drink a Swede, unless you happen to be a Finn or at least a Russian.” “Allan admitted that the difference between madness and genius was subtle, and that he couldn’t with certainty say which it was in this case, but that he had his suspicions."There are a number of others that I will add if I get around to rereading the book.

What do You think about De 100-jarige Man Die Uit Het Raam Klom En Verdween (2000)?

I've got a lot of mixed feelings about this novel. On one hand Jonasson manages to write a story that's full of charm but then there are lots of little tics which bothered me.My main gripe is that there are way too many coincidences. I know I am reading a work of fiction but the fact that all the main characters are saved by an act of coincidence just made the book unrealistic. Plus after a while all the characters got on my nerves, not to mention the long drawn out 'confession'There are some good points. I enjoyed reading the historical bits- especially the North Korea sections and the book is wrapped up quite well. Saying that this is definitely one book I may not return to.
