I really enjoyed this book, right up to the final 12 pages or so. It is a well written and evocative look at the days of ancient Rome and the Roman army. The real historical people are woven into the fictional story line in a credible and non-jarring way, the plot lines are interesting and relatively non-predictable and so far as I could judge it is pretty accurate from a historical point of view. Thrilling chases, great battle scenes etc etc. But it was let down by the ending. I read to the end and thought "Oh, is that what it was all about. How dull." Maybe you will find the ending more enjoyable. Certainly it is a cracking read until the last bit. “I have now become his fan to the extent that I am buying the first part of the series. Crassus's lost legion of 10,000 warriors... wow that's a good plot. Fighting in far away lands with no idea how to make it back to Rome. The only aspect that I have a problem dealing with is Ceaser is shown as a Rapist thou there is no historical evidence to the same in reality. The recreation of the times which were turbulent and filled with uncertainties is portrayed brilliantly. A great Fictional read. ”
Every chapter seems to close with a cliff-hanger that keeps you reading furiously.
