What do You think about Dead On The Island (1995)?
BOTTOM LINE: #1 Truman Smith, PI, Galveston, Texas. Tru’s been hibernating since finally giving up on finding his missing sister a year ago, but comes out into the world to find another missing girl, as a favor to his old buddy Dino. Smoothly written classic PI format, with nice bits of Galveston history layered in. The characters are very good, and I liked Tru, although at times he's so laid back he seems like Rockford on valium...! And although the plotting was easily guessed, everything was well-tied together and finished off by a fast-moving (and sad) final scene. Not the most powerful or scary PI story I’ve ever read, but well-crafted, and quite enjoyable. Look forward to reading #2, and meeting Tru again, and especially Miz Sally, a wonderful invention of Crider’s, easily my favorite character (well, after the cat...). I still like Sheriff Rhodes best, but Tru is rather better developed as a character in book 1 than Crider's Carl Burns the professor was by his book 2.
