Faith Of My Fathers (2006) - Plot & Excerpts

Listened to the first 6 CDs, skipped to disc 10 and didn't miss anything. Its historical fiction about Manassah's reign. Manassah basically felt neglected by his Dad Hezekiah who died young. He blames the early death on God. He happens to meet a sorcerer who makes him believe that his close friends and counselors are conspiring against him, and so he goes on a rampage and tries to kill them. His childhood friend, named Joshua, escapes, plots revenge, and returns to steal the ark of the covenant by making large jars of olive oil explode on the temple mount. Of course, in the midst of all this, there is a bit of sexual tension here. Joshua is engaged to the lovely Yael and is determined to marry her. But when he escapes, he encounters a servant girl Miriam who, after nursing him back to health, starts to like him, but Joshua does not like her. We are torn.I asked myself, why do I not like this? I think one of the big problems is that it is just modern American Pop Christianity imputed into the past history of the Bible, which, I have to admit, is not all bad - mostly, it is just a bit boring and cliched I guess. Although, having huge jars of olive oil literally explode on the temple mount is interesting. I didn't know olive oil could explode.

Hezekiah is dead - Manasseh is king. I liked that the author wrote a note to her readers after the narrative explaining where she got her sources and how she found the direction of this book. It is an interesting idea - that somehow, the faithful removed the Ark of the Covenant during Manasseh's reign. I had read another idea somewhere else that Jeremiah had somehow removed the Ark of the Covenant before Jerusalem fell, but either would work. We know the end, just not the how.The book follows Manasseh just after he had become king at age 12 for the prologue. His closest "friend" is Joshua, son of Eliakim, Hezekiah's court administrator. Fast forward another 12-13 years and Manasseh accuses all those around him of plotting to replace him - and he listens to the half-truths espoused by a stranger. He orders Isaiah's and Eliakim's executions and looking for Joshua, his same friend. The action mainly follows/alternates between Joshua and keeping his family safe and Manasseh, as he continues listening to the half-truths.

What do You think about Faith Of My Fathers (2006)?

FROM BOOK COVER: Constant companions in their youth, Manasseh, son of Hezekiah, and Joshua, son of the palace administrator, have been primed for leadership of the kingdom of Judah. But anger toward God begins to smolder in Manasseh's heart upon his father's unexpected death. As Manasseh comes to power, his insecurity leads him down the path of sorcery. Fearing a conspiracy, he lashes out at the leaders of his father's regime. As the mayhem of Manasseh's reign begins to unfold, Joshua and his family suffer devastating loss. The battle lines are drawn as Joshua seeks revenge against his boyhood friend. And with the future of God's faithful remnant at stake, Joshua struggles with whether to run from Yahweh... or to Him. Chronicles of the Kings Book 4My review - This has been my favorite of the series so far. I loved the story of Joshua. But Manasseh's actions and thoughts made me what to jump right in the book and hurt him. Miriam's love for Joshua and her need for someone to love her made my heart ache. Hoping the fifth and final book in the series is just as good as this one was.

311 pages - The 4th book in the Chronicles of the King series.Oh my goodness, oh my goodness!! This book rocked. It was so exciting that I didn't want to put it down. This books takes place during the early years of King Manasseh's reign in Jerusalem. I was deeply saddened by how easily he was confused and convinced by pagan priests that idolatry was of God. He lived a paranoid life due to the deceit. He turns on everyone who was faithful to his father Hezekiah, and thinks there is some sort of conspiracy plotting to dethrone him. His childhood best friend, and now greatest enemy Joshua plans a heist to save the faithful few true believers that are left. So so so so soooooo good!!!!

This is the fourth of the Chronicles of the Kings series, and the first half of the story of King Manasseh. (Copied from my thoughts on the fifth book of the series, these words are equally appropriate to describe my thoughts about the fourth.) This story was engaging and entertaining. The story and character development were much more imaginative than in the second and third of this series. The characters in the second and third were flat and added little to the Biblical story. The fourth and fifth in this series were good stories in their own right. The entire series caused me to refer to the Biblical accounts and to think about the history in a more in depth way than I had previously. For that reason, although this story would rate a 3 for my particular tastes, I give it a solid 4.
