I definitely recommend this book to any dog lovers and/or anyone with a soul:) this was an excellent debut novel from this author and ill be looking forward to reading his future work. I got this book as a gift, and while it looked good at the time, I buried it in my stack and just got to it nearly a year later. What a heart-warming book! I'm notoriously tough on endings but I truly feel as though this had the perfect ending. I didn't cry throughout the whole book, but at the very end in the epilogue...I was full-on bawling...and I enjoyed every second of it:) I can't remember the last time I cried at a book. Please read this book...you will not be disappointed. And btw, I've read some reviews on here saying that they started this and never finished it b/c they didn't like the way it started for whatever reason. If you start this book and don't finish it, you will never know what a gem you're missing out on! I'm an avid reader but this book seriously is my all-time favorite. The emotions written into it are so raw, so compelling, it's as if you yourself are Fletcher Carson. The love for the dog, Jack, is fantastically relatable and I found myself crying at least three times throughout the story. The ending... you couldn't ask for a better one.Being in the army myself, I noticed a few things that wouldn't typically happen, like the lieutenant calling his soldiers by their first names, but it was a good story line overall and I learned a lot about Vietnam through this book. I highly recommend it to anyone, even the ones who don't normally read war books, like myself. Simply phenomenal!
