First Contact-Or, It's Later Than You Think (Parrot Sketch Excluded) (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

I love Kurt Vonnegut. Initially, I thought this book was going to be hopelessly derivative. The title is an obvious nod to KV. When the author first broke the fourth wall, it seemed gratuitous, without purpose, and thrown in just to be like Breakfast of Champions. He even openly named this influence and his desire to include sketches like the master. But then he introduced the two-year old being read this book by his mother as it was being written, and all was forgiven, as it became clear that Mandery has command over these devices he borrowed, and has made them his own. Funny, poignant satire with existential overtones, I thoroughly enjoyed this one. This book throws some pretty nihilistic and existencialistic questions. It's a good SciFi read. Sometimes it feels predictable, yet the end feels really far fetched. But it's main goal, of getting your brain of thought on, it delivers. Mandery breaks constantly the 4th wall, giving it a fell almost like a Woody Allen film (Wich is a recurring topic). Mandery manages to create a complex, yet simple and mundane, galaxy facing life-changing situations. He manages to write a love story (yes better than twilight) wich feels "quirky and adorcable", but a little shallow. Great read. Great author.
