I can understand why most people don't like this book. Matthew Joseph Harrington, and recently to a lesser extent Niven, target an audience that is VERY informed about all aspects of science and history - and that also has read pretty much every science fiction novel and short story ever written.The more I read the latest MJH and Niven books, the more I find older SF too pedestrian, too long-winded and too handed-to-me-on-a-platter. MJH and Niven expect me to THINK while reading, not just blandly scan the words.I loved Goliath Stone the first time I read it. With each re-read I spot more subtleties. About 1/2 way through my fourth pass and am still enthralled.If one is not completely on top of one's game, this book will probably seem confusing and boring.Matthew and Larry, do not be deterred by bad reviews. There are plenty of us who get exactly what you were doing and why every word in the novel was carefully chosen - and why unnecessary words were left out.And yes, I hope desperately for a sequel!Bravo!Raargh Wunderkzin Very enjoyable to be reading old-school hard sf. Niven includes a lot of humor and, though he can be didactic as Heinlein, he is less annoying about it. Very nice to once again read a book where the scientist philosopher saves the world with technology; I worry at times that this type of story has died out forever. I want to live in a wold where there is someone as altruistic and seemingly omniscient programming the nanobots. Recommended.

Hard to follow dialogue. But it had some neat ideas.
