Boling creates an extremely strong sense of time and place. The people, the culture, the food, the impending horror of war and amidst it all a family that you have to love. I will have to give Boling his due in creating such warm characters and then being willing to sacrifice some later in the book, but that unfortunately tracks with real life. A wonderful read, an educational experience and most of all a book that leaves you with a great sense of worth, of the people, time and culture.
What do You think about Guernica (2008)?
one of those rare books that was really well written, but also with a good story line

Read and re-reading to link with Paul Preston's The Spanish Holocaust.

Predictable "twist" at the end, but still a very moving story.
