Homeward Bound: Why Women Are Embracing The New Domesticity (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

I think this book doesn't get to it's point until the conclusion, which is sad because she has some good points and ideas there. Her condescending tone and judgement toward her subjects made this book incredibly frustrating to read. It was hard to discern her overall thesis and it seemed like she was presenting research and thoughts without a cohesive theme to bring it together. A better developed thesis would have taken this book far. Wow, this book got me thinking. I'm one of the folks she's talking about in some ways of the "new domesticity": crafting, canning, lifestyle blogging, growing heirloom veggies - and my mom has always puzzled over where the drive came from in me and my sister, since that sort of thing definitely wasn't there for her. Emily Matchar goes through the trends, the history, and the relevance to feminism chapter-by-chapter. I was blown away by it. The writing and research are superb, and the content very thought provoking. I related to a lot of the chapters, and was in alternate parts scared/frustrated by the interviewees in others (e.g. the ultra-natural movement, anti-vaccine moms). But all in all it got thoughts spinning. I think this was actually my favourite book that I've read this year!

Really fascinating read about the current DIY culture that looks at it from many angles.
