I should have read Schindler's List. This book was so depressing. Dessa Dean lost her mother just two months ago. Mother froze to death in a blizzard. Dessa Dean was with her! Dessa Dean's ears were terribly frost bitten and now pain her greatly, a constant reminder of the tragedy. Also, she now has agoraphobia and cannot leave the cabin. (It's historical fiction.) She is left home alone all day while her father tends his trap lines. Trapping isn't going too well either. So when the dog comes round - the lost, abandoned, injured dog - Dessa Dean tries to make friends with it. But the dog can't stand to be trapped in the cabin, and Dessa Dean can't stand to go out. (For a happier story, read Schindler's List.) A girl afraid to go outside and a dog afraid to be inside. Dessa Dean spends her days inside the cabin. She stokes the fire, does the school assignments that her father leaves her before he goes off trapping, and fixes supper. And in nightmares and daymares, she is haunted by her mother's death. Then comes a scratching at the door. The dog that Dessa rescues ultimately rescues her. A splendid dog story and one with a happy ending.
