Jakarandapuun Lapset (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

Actually close to 4 stars. This was a difficult book to read but worth it - the stories of the horrendous events and the lingering effects of the Islamic Revolution in Iran are both terrifying and tragic. The constant fear, the need always to dissemble, the inability to trust anyone, the loss of loved ones, of home, of any sense of safety are vividly drawn. The memories of family warmth contrast vividly with the violence that is visited on anyone who happens to fall afoul of the Morality Police, or worse, to be imprisoned. The lingering effects of the 80's events still haunt the now grown children as they try to make lives for themselves. It is easy to understand why many of them have left home, harder to understand why some have chosen to stay. The writing is lyrical and lovely in spots, but uneven. There were times when it was difficult to keep the relationships between the multiple generations of the families straight, even with a table.
