And it wouldn’t stop. Jess opened one eye. It was still dark and the noise definitely wasn’t her alarm. Beside her, Sean slept heavily, his breathing slow and even, clearly not at all bothered by the sound. He was still here? They must have both fallen asleep after their lovemaking. That hadn’t been Jess’s intention—she didn’t want a painful farewell breakfast. But her own exhaustion and the painkillers Sean had taken were likely to blame. The beeping stopped and the sudden silence was almost deafening. But then the beeping started again a moment later. Jess groaned her annoyance and sat up, blinking as she tried to make sense of things with her sleep-fuzzed brain. The noise was coming from the other side of the bed, slightly muffled. She leaned over Sean, trying not to disturb him, and she spotted a faint glow beside the bed.
