King Of The Mound: My Summer With Satchel Paige (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
What a great book! This is the 2nd of the Sunshine State Younger Reader nominee titles and it is a winner. The author presents believable characterization amidst introducing several important discrimination issues -- polio after-effects, black athletes, racist America, sports-loving girls. The father was not a likeable character but he was believable and clearly human. And I love the sports history, even though I'm not a big baseball fan. I checked out the details online and Satchel Paige is accurately presented, even with the fictionalized elements in the story. I hope this author writes more books for kids. • A nice little historical fiction story of characters playing on a bush-league baseball team in 1936 with the great black pitcher Satchel Paige.• The young man (Nick) is recovering from polio, hanging with the team his widowed dad plays for. Satchel takes him under his wing. • Nick learns how to overcome adversity, has his first girlfriend, and faces discrimination both on and off the field.
