Read for a bookgroup theme of 'English legends' this telling of a story from the tales of Robin Hood was useful for presenting the history of the period and for neatly removing all the romanticism and 'cleanliness' of the period usually incorporated to ensure the 'merry men' part of the legend makes it all family friendly. This portrays the period as unsavoury, gory, treacherous and factional. I am glad that the book did not come with accompanying smells, although the descriptions of the various deaths etc were vivid enough to make this unpleasant reading for someone who really does not enjoy long descriptions of fights and deaths. As a historical tale I get the feeling that it is probably as accurate as a modern fiction writer could make it so that was helpful. As an enjoyable read, just not the genre for me.
What do You think about King's Man (2011)?
A far fetched fictional account of a well known piece of English history but well worth reading.
