Knit Your Bit: A World War I Story (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

I rarely write reviews here but this book was such a wonderful surprise I'm planing on buying it for a few knitter friends who have sons. Additionally I'll be sharing this with my own son as we are always looking for ways to keep our hearts and minds busy when my husband deploys. And since I homeschool this will be a great addition to our US history studies. This tells the story of Mikey wanting to do something big to support the war effort while his dad is away being a soldier. He initially rejects his mom's suggestion of knitting because boys don't knit. But when his teacher announce a "knit in" and the girls challenge him and the boys to see who's better, Mikey rises to the challenge. There are wonderful illustrations as well as real pictures of boys from that time knitting. There are also resources if you want to learn more about historic knitting patterns or find a charity to knit for. Interest Level: 1-4th gradeA little boy wants to do something big to help his dad who is fighting in the WWI. During that time the Winters were very cold in Europe so in the U.S. men and women were knitting socks, hats and scarfs to send overseas. The little boy thought that knitting was for girls until he entered the knitting contest and learned an important lesson. Great book to read to get a child's perspective in this story. This can be read to introduce a unit that has to do with WWI and ask students what they know about WWI.
