Stunning visual detail mixed with an enthralling and completely unique tale. This story is about a Pippi Longstockings-type hero girl who is on a quest to find her pirate captain father. To do so she must delve in to a fantastical underwater world, fight pirates (who she always defeats with ease) and travel with hilarious companions- a parrot inside a dead fish and two stately swordfish in armour.I cannot recommend this highly enough. It was a masterpiece. I can't wait to read the next instalments, as this one left me on the edge of my seat! This graphic novel is the whole package. An adorable fairy tale about a young daughter of pirate captain in a fairy tale sea, the page stock and edge fraying, the ink style, the embossed cover, all puts you in the world of the fable. Sometimes the story and art are so surreal it's a bit of a challenge to follow exactly what's going on. Nevertheless I found the characters extremely well drawn (both literally and figuratively) and the story was sweet and fun. It's the kind of book that manages to be entertaining for both children and adults. I'd recommend it for anyone who wants a great adventure story for older children or for anyone who likes intricately inked art in a very archaic cartoon style.
Such beautiful illustration - reminds me of Albrecht Durer, except Durer didn't do girl pirates.

Absolutely fantastic, off-the-wall comics. Bastian's writing is a joy, and the art is amazing.
