Last Christian (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

Abby had been born to missionary parents in a small remote village in New Zealand. After the deaths of her parents, she remained with her village until a strange disease kills everyone except Abby. The year is 2088; Abby leaves the village and learns that her grandfather has left a message for her to reintroduce Americans to Christianity as there are few believers left in the U.S.Abby had loved her missionary life in the jungle, but she accepts her grandfather's challenge although she faces derision and persecution. If all science fiction and mystery could be written more about human ideals (as this one is) and less about cool weapons, I would become a big fan!Interesting ideas about eternal life VS living forever. While characters do discuss religion, this book does not come off as preachy or sappy. THis was either a sci fi book about nanites, artificial brains and VR. Or a religious work trying to convert readers to Christianity. I felt it was more of the former. The characters were well thought out. I really liked how Abby got introduced to the modern world from the jungle and her remarks on what felt strange. The "bad guys" or "shade of grey guys" were also well developed and it was easy to understand their motivations.Even though there were many quotes from the Bible, it didn't feel like preaching. I think because the society didn't accept the character doing the "you are a sinner" part and the actual quotes were presented from a historical/research/exploring context.Either way, it worked and made for a good read.
