Love In The Present Tense (2006) - Plot & Excerpts

Love in the Present TenseBy http://www.audible.com/search/ref=a_s...So for a reader. And I do mean a reader, somebody that lives to read the next best book, little is as frustrating as not having a person, persons to tell all about your current amazing read. And as a reader, little is as frustrating as having a person tell you alllll about a book, a brilliant book, in the most minute detail. So we have a catch 22. While me the reader of the most brilliant book right this read wants to tell you everything about Love in the Present Tense a part of me knows I cannot. What I can do is to tell you that if you love a hero/anti hero all in one then the ready made "father" in this story is your ultimate character. He is so human. So frail. So strong. So perfectly imperfect. Pearl. She is present for so little of the book but the entire plot line, sub plot runs through her like breath through a human body. She is the perfect mom. Even at 14 this girl has her act together better than most real people I know. She is truly a pearl. A precious treasure. Not at all common. The kid. At 5 this little guy climbed into my heart. At 18 he has done so much. Lived so much. Grown so much that I moved from love to admiration. Not a perfect human. None of these people are. But real, intense and with a wisdom unique to all their own experiences. Can I recommend this book to any one? Yes indeed I can. I think everybody can learn something from this and I think everybody should read this to learn more. You have all of this inside of you but trust me, the chances of you actually voicing all of these emotions and realizations are extremely limited. I listened to this book on audio narrated byhttp://www.audible.com/search/ref=a_s...http://www.audible.com/search/ref=a_s... andhttp://www.audible.com/search/ref=a_s... These three people made a brilliant story into a production to fall in love with. Incase you guys do not recall who the author is. She wrote the following book amongst others;http://www.audible.com/pd/Fiction/Pay...This is one of those books where a 5 star rating simply does not do it justice. WaAr

I'm finding it difficult to put my review into words. I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I borrowed it from my aunt when I was on holiday after I'd finished all my own books. It's certainly not the sort of story I go for when choosing a book but once I got into it I easily fell in love with the two male characters. There were parts of the story that were tragic and sad but I never felt like they were dwelled on. The relationship between the two lead male characters is heartwarming and inspiring and Pearls story is eye opening.(view spoiler)[I found Pearl's POV in the beginning a bit difficult to read due to the dialect/language. "Girl, comes clear somebody's number 'bout to be up, try and see it ain't you. Let him die now, you die some other time. When your number finally come up, you'll be ready. You'll've had lotsa. practice."However i'm glad it's written that way as it really helped me put myself in her shoes and understand her way of life. Her story is tragic in a way but as a reader i never felt like that as I don't think Pearl ever did. She accepted her life how it is, because that's what she knows.I fell in love with Mitch, Leonard and their relationship. I really admired Mitch for the way he embraced becoming a father figure at a young age, to a kid he should of had no responsibility to. Leonard to me was just adorable, I loved the way his mind worked. (hide spoiler)]

What do You think about Love In The Present Tense (2006)?

I came upon this audio-book as a result of a hold failing at the local library. Frustrated and needing something to listen to as I chop vegetables and do other mind-numbing chores, I quickly perused the audio-book shelves and grabbed two possibilities: something called The Delaney Christmas Carol and this. The Delaney thing was a wash-out, within fifteen minutes I yanked it out of the CD player and replaced it with Love in the Present Tense. The difference was almost palpable: much better writing and impressive vocal performances by the three actors representing the viewpoints of Pearl, a desperate and impoverished teenager living in a very rough part of Los Angeles, Leonard her son, and Mitch, a young man who becomes Leonard's father figure. So I'm not sure about my objectivity about this, having taken it up after a rather bad book. Its rough beginning is misleading about the kind of novel it's going to be; they almost lost me in the first fifteen minutes too. However, it actually becomes a kinder, gentler narrative. There is some violence and sex, but nothing overly graphic or gratuitous. The story weaves back and forth in time and rolls between the three narrators. In this way, it reminded me a little of The Time Traveller's Wife. I'm not sure how I would have responded to it as a reading experience, but the audio-book is well-done and worthwhile.

I have heard great things about Funerals for Horses and Pay it Forward, two of Catherine Ryan Hyde's novels. I haven't read either yet, but recognized her name on the cover of Love in the Present Tense. I picked it up hoping for a nice, relatively straightforward read to balance all the schoolwork I'm currently swamped with. I was not disappointed.Love in the Present Tense revolves around three characters. Pearl, the daughter of a drug addict, becomes pregnant at age 13 with a policeman's son. She kills the policeman when she realizes that he has a family of his own. In her eyes he is just another man incapable of "forever love." Pearl's fragile son Leonard is born prematurely and therefore suffers various physical ailments which she has a hard time helping him cope with. Pearl struggles to support herself and her son financially, but makes sure that Leonard always knows how much he is loved. Mitch, Pearl and Leonard's neighbor, is a bachelor in his mid-twenties busy running his own business and beginning an affair with the mayor's wife.In a sudden turn, the policemen who have been looking for Pearl since she murdered one of their partners find her. She drops Leonard off with Mitch in a moment of panic, and they are not sure if they will ever see her again. The book is told from the points of view of each of these characters. Readers get to see several key events through Pearl, Leonard, and Mitch's eyes, and through the struggles of real life grow to understand the many layers of "forever love."If you're looking for a heartwarming story about truly selfless love, this is your novel

Where do I begin. First let me say that I am a huge fan of Pay It Forward. I cried like a baby when I saw the movie, although I am guilty of never reading the novel. So when I heard that Hyde had written this novel, I was pretty excited. And let me just say that I was NOT disappointed. Hyde delivers yet another great story in such a fantastic way. I loved all of the characters and they had such important parts in the storyline. It's an amazing story with a fantastic cast of characters. I recommend 100%
