Made To Crave: Satisfying Your Deepest Desire With God, Not Food (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

Recommended by Melissa Breedlove after conversation on Word of Wisdom, (When you rely on any unnecessary substance on a consistent basis consider its worth and the control is has over you. God wants us to be free from anything that has power over us and recommends all things in moderation, hence the Word of Wisdom. Turn to him in times of need rather than any unnecessary substance)This book goes along with the idea that we should turn to God in times of need rather than food. It is about changing our habits with food if we have emotional eating issues. While I couldn't entirely relate because the only emotion I experience that involves eating is boredom, it could be a powerful tool for someone who has deeper emotional eating issues. There were some great quotes in it and I think the author would be very entertaining to see in a seminar. In the right hands this book could be a very powerful tool for empowerment.pg 42 "Desperation breeds degradation. [W]hen what is lacking in life foes from being an annoyance to an anxiety we run the risk of compromising inn ways we never thought we would.61 "That food choice is permissible but not beneficial - so don't eat it...Food isn't sinful. But when food is what Satan holds up in front of us and says, "You'll never be free from this battle. You will always bounce from feeling deprived when you're dieting to feeling guilty when you're splurging. Victory isn't possible. You aren't capable of self-control with food." we must see that its inappropriate consummation can be his lure to draw our heart into a place of defeat."*179 (1 Corinthians 6:12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. King James Version) "The commentary in my Bible remarks about these versus: "Some actions are not sinful in themselves, but they are not appropriate because they can control our lives and lead us away from God." Life Application Study Bible66 "Being ruled by anything other than God is something God takes quite seriously...I don't want to live resistant to the power Christ's death and resurrection provides for me just because I can't walk away from my unhealthy cravings."120 "I always thought, "If only I could put on those skinny jeans, my whole world would fall into place and put a permanent smile on my face." Yet there I was just hours [after discovering my skinny jeans fit again], falling prey to the same topsy-turvy stuff I used to think wouldn't bother me if only I were smaller. This is the curse of the skinny jeans. My body size is not tied to my happy. If my happy was missing when I was larger, it will still be missing when I get smaller."128 author referring to a sermon, "How can we stand and wag our fingers in the direction of alcohol only to walk into the church-wide covered dish buffet and stuff ourselves sick with fried, covered-and-smothered, grossly caloric delights that buckle our paper plates and cause our stomachs to cry for antacids?" Overindulgence is overindulgence.134 "Whether we are talking about food, wine, sex, shopping, or anything else with which we try to fill ourselves, nothing in this world can ever fill us like God's portion. [F]or he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things" (Psalm 107:9)141 "...pity parties demand an abundance of high-calorie delights, eaten and eaten some more. But pity parties are a cruel way to entertain, for they leave behind a deeper emptiness than we started with in the first place."191 "Remember the lesson God taught [the Israelites] in the desert about dependence on Him by asking for their daily portion of manna? ... Even in the New Testament book of Philippians God warns us about letting the stomach become an idol in our lives."192 "My response to all these same circumstances [seeing airbrushed models and dieting magazines in the checkout line at the grocery store - where you are buying FOOD] changed because I have changed inside I have found my "want to" physically, emotionally, and spiritually. My healthy choices make me feel empowered, not deprived."I especially like that last line. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, we are asked to refrain from many things and are sometimes described by others as if we "can't DO ANYthing." God has given us free agency and provides ways for us to be of clear mind to make good choices. I am not being forced to refrain from anything, it is my CHOICE, and ultimately I am left feeling empowered and free rather than deprived and controlled by a mere substance. and now I feel as if I should end this review with an AMEN! Really blessed my life--although this book focuses on food/health, it can be applied to any area of life where we try to fill a void with anything short of God.While I didn't always agree with how she interpreted/applied some of the scriptures, I do believe that the Lord can use a scripture verse to teach a truth perhaps not even in the words themselves. So the lesson I learned from that is the importance of reading my scriptures more regularly and more mindfully so that I can receive my own spiritual insights.
