Only reason why I didn't give this book 5 stars was because of what it was actually about. The story, main characters and plot were all really good, but for me, I think of this book to be partially true because hitler was a real person and the nazis would do terrible things. I know that this book is classified under fiction, but because of what it was about and that it was kinda of real in a way, for me I take one star away. I picked up this book because of my interest in stories from the second world war. It was a quick read for me but certainly one that grabbed my interest. It tells the story of Lida, a young Ukrainian girl who has been captured along with her younger sister Larissa. They are separated by the Nazi's and Lida is sent to a work camp where she and others are used as slave labour. Her story is a difficult one filled with evidence of man's inhumanity to fellow man. Although fictional, the story is based on others that really happened. At the end of the war Lida searches for her sister and lives for years in a refugee camp. She cannot return home as the Soviets will treat her as if she herself is a Nazi. This book clearly demonstrates the horrors of war and how it can affect children. I recommend it to anyone interested . In the history of this time period and to youth in grade 6-7.
