I really enjoyed reading this book, and the history that it included was interesting to read. I have always enjoyed Bible reading, so the fact that this book ties that into the story makes it come even more alive for me. Though it adds to the biblical account of the woman called Mary Magdalene (Mary of Magdala), the author stays true to the customs of the time and the biblical knowledge that is available. To expand on the character, and the life she may have led, makes for an enjoyable & interesting read. The first half of this book was wonderful. I would give it 5 stars. It brought Mary Magdalene to life in a novel format. However, halfway through the book the author switched to only quoting the Bible. I just didn't find it a consistent match with the earlier writing. I had a lot of trouble sticking with the story from that point. However, it really did bring a Bible character to life for me in a new way. I will certainly look at Mary Magdalene differently now.
