I was really disappointed at The Mongoliad series and book 3 was a total let down. Book 1 was awesome, but the two later books was a total waste of time. It seems like Neal Stephenson and company lost focus after writing book 1. I thought that book 3 would never end because all you ever read is the battle and killings. 90% of the story is pure action, where you just get bored with the constant stabbing between the tribes. There is very little plot behind the battles. The election of the new pope was interesting, but the story gets lost in the constant wars. The series just gets tiring to read because its very one sided with way too much action and not enough storytelling. I would read the first book and skip the rest. A sweeping story of knights of the church trying to save the west from descendants of Genghis Khan. In this final chapter both sides are willing to give all for their empire, a Pope is chosen...twice and the holy grail may have been found, or not. I learned more about Templars and all the christian soldiers. I never knew there were so many faction of knights of the cross.I picked this book up at the library and even though I know how the story ends, I will seek out the first two books to see how it started.
Fast, gripping. Ending suitably open for more to come. Not a masterpiece, but a good read.

Excellent. The best of the trilogy. So real I think it is history and not fiction.

I enjoyed the trilogy, but toward the end I really just wanted it to be over.
