Mostly True Adventures Of Homer P. Figg (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

Homer a young boy must save his honest older brother that was tricked into signing up for the war. As Homer makes his way to find his brother he faces challenges that he must solve. Homer is very good at lying which helps him in his journey but sometime his lies are exaggerated that people do not believe him. I loved how Homer's lie could sometimes be exaggerated but many children love to exaggerate their stories. I think this is a good book children may like because it follows the journey of a young boy who is determined to help someone important to him. Homer runs away from his mean uncle’s, who has sold Homer’s brother Harold to the US Army, to find him. Along they way he encounters different people and situations that hinder or get him to where he needs to be. Each one connects to the journey and holds a certain importance. The book deals with relationships that young students may also be going through. The uncle is rough and mean to the boys. Some of the friends along the way are kind and helpful while others cannot be trusted. Most importantly is the brother bond relationship. Homer will do what ever it takes to help his brother and to find out how far he will go you will have to read the book. Male students will enjoy the mischievous Homer and the girls may enjoy the crazy adventures. Overall a great book for young, about fourth to fifth grade students. I enjoyed the connection to the Civil War and history references.
