Mr Corbett's Ghost And Other Stories (Puffin) (1976) - Plot & Excerpts

Leon Garfield is a very good writer.I am particularly impressed by his use of repetition. He knows how to repeat words to make them funny, moving, serious and more. I can't think of any writer who can use repetition with such keenness and finesse. Each of the three stories had words that were repeated. The first, Mr Corbett's ghost, mainly repeated the phrase 'heart and soul' - and that is what the story is about. In being haunted by the lost, lonely soul of his hated employer, young Benjamin learns what is in his heart. The second repeated words of dinginess and glory and made an point about what glory may actually be, and how great talent can be wrapped in dingy packages. The third, another story with soul selling, was about love getting the main character both in and out of character. This also included scenes I've never read in a sea story; such as being locked in a hold with a bunch of loose fetters flying about and a marvellous description of a ship with its sails furled being like a house with the roof opened.I'm very glad I dedicated a month or so to various Garfield works, he has given me a lot of pleasure and a few tips.
