Nepieciešamais ļaunums (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

I'll say right off that my ratings are a bit off-kilter for this whole series. Looking back, I can't remember why I only gave four stars to the first one. That's what I wanted to give the conclusion, though it maybe wasn't quite as good as the others (but only by a smidge, and only because I thought the biggest emotional punches came early in this one). Reading my earlier reviews reminded me that these aren't so much about the plot, but about the thudding tone that gets inside your chest when you enter this world through Tregillis' writing. I tweeted while reading this it's like having bags of wet sand dropped on you (in a good way), and my first review compared it to being hit by a bar of soap in a sock. No scars, but you feel it for a long time after. Thoughtful and emotional and dark and telling. Great stuff, and a strong conclusion to the tale. So many spoilers!!!!:A worryingly satisfying end to the Milkweed/Triptych saga. Marsh -with baggage in tow- has his end. Gretel has hers. Lorimer, Stephenson and the rest of SIS/Milkweeed are tasked and upended by a friendly foe with designs on wielding and disarming the hand of time and future chaos. It was a harrowing ride from beginning to end and I'm sorry to see them all go. Even Reinhardt and Klaus. The demise of lesser but powerful characters struck a unpredictably deep cord with me. Liv finally gets what she so desired but, hadn't realized she'd lost and the you're left wondering 'where do we go from here'- but, in a good way. Some don't like tidily wrapped storylines but, this sated my worries and converted my anxiety to a long sigh.Well done Ian. Can't wait to read a new series from him.
