If they had done really well, the trainers would let the ponies run around the arena together without their harnesses, and the ponies would have mock races together. They had gotten used to each others’ contorted smiles and had even seen a couple of the experienced ponies from a distance in the regular stable. With their limited contact with only their stable mates, trainers and groomers, and nothing but their pony life to concentrate on, the terrible transformations merely registered as an annoyance when they had an itch and had to content themselves with rubbing on something to alleviate it. One afternoon while the girls were running free races, Diablo winked at Arturo and said loudly, “They’re not very fast.” Arturo shook his head sadly and followed with, “They’ll probably end up pulling plows.” The ponies turned and glared. “You’re in trouble now, boys,” Antonio chuckled. The three ponies walked over to the trainers and started pawing the ground with their booted feet. “Hey, it’s just an observation.” Diablo smiled at Copper’s narrowed eyes and she responded by pawing furiously.
