What a fantastic young adult, historical fiction book. Not only does it do an excellent job of keeping true to the events and locations of the American Revolution but it also brilliantly weaves the fictional story of Sophia Calderwood into the history. Avi is spectacular at the thoughtshot so we, the reader, are brought right into her inner struggles and decision making. Sophia grows so much through her experiences and I think my female students will relate to the growth of her courage and sophistication, at the same time my male students will relate to the inner workings of the spy network during the revolution. Awesome read! This is an amazing tale of a young girl growing up in New York City and doing everything she can to aid the Patriots in their fight against the British. Sophia Calderwood provides a unique look into Benedict Arnold's betrayal of his country and startling look into how one moment, watching another man hang, can change a person. I recommend this for anyone looking to get into historical fiction but just can't find the right mix of suspense and history.
Highly recommend to read with 5th-8th graders , or anyone who is interested in Benedict Arnold.
