The Boys, Volume 7: The Innocents (2010) - Plot & Excerpts
Normally The Boys is a sort of guilty-pleasure for me, so this one took me completely by surprise. The character dynamics and development were phenomenal, and Garth Ennis proved his talent for varied writing by composing a bit of romance without the usual sap. I don't know how he pulled it off, I would have expected such a thing to be nauseatingly out of place in a story such as this, yet I can't resist reading on to find out what happens. As the story has developed, Garth has done a brilliant job of building complex characters and humanizing them within a world that's anything but human. Without a doubt the best of The Boys series thus far. After being around since the very beginning and offering very little to the series the romantic subplot of “The Boys” gets resolution. Hughie and the team finally discover that our superhero hating protagonist is actually dating a superhero. Sounds like a goofy scenario, but Ennis makes good things out of it.We are gradually getting to a point in this tale where goofing around and easy black and white conflicts are being replaced by storytelling delivered in shades of gray. The main plot of the volume sees Hughie protecting a league of naïve, mentally challenged people with superpowers. I hope Ennis runs with this ambiguous approach far enough to make the reader forget all the simplistic shock humor that’s been a rather large part of the series previously and which still persists but in manageable quantities.
