They had not removed it because he was so weak from loss of blood that they knew he would not survive the further shock of an amputation, but they fully expected he would have to undergo such surgery as soon as he was stronger. The duke shook his head and resolved to keep that information to himself, at least for now. He had been stunned to see the superficial Lady Quentin there in the carnage that was still Waterloo village, but although he admired her courage in seeking out her husband, if he were to be honest with himself he would have to admit it had been her maid who had inspired his chivalrous gesture. One look at those speaking emerald eyes, filled with such fear and dread even as she succeeded in keeping herself under firm control, had caused him to put his own wants and comforts aside and do what he could to help her.
