The Hunchback Assignments (2009) - Plot & Excerpts
I'm only halfway through the book, but from what I understand it's a science/fantasy novel taking place in Great Britain during the 1800s. It follows the telling tale of a deformed hunchback from France (much like the Hunchback of Notre Dame) that has the ability to shapeshift. He is adopted by a man named Socrates who takes care of him for many years and developing him into a secret agent. When Modo, the hunchback, becomes 15, he is then appointed his first assignment and put to use from Socrates to uncover the evil plots of a mad doctor and a secret society of evil. This novel, so far, is quite interesting and pretty captivating. I think it really keeps a hold of the reader due to its difference of story. It gives a new perspective where the protagonist is neither very handsome or beautiful. The character seems familiar to the Hunchback of Notre Dame, but with a different twist in its plot which I find quite amusing. Modo is a hideously deformed child with special abilities, living in a cage in a grotesquerie when the mysterious Mr. Socrates rescues him and trains him to be a secret agent for the steampunk British Empire. He's like a member of the Victorian X-Men. This story is a romp with everything you would expect from a steampunk tale: misguided applications of technology, strong female characters, dapper gentlemen, crazy steampunk and clockwork devices, and toothless urchins. It reads very quickly as every chapter ends on a cliffhanger. I really want to read the sequels, but they aren't available on Kindle or at my local library.
