This is really good. I wish the author's note had been published at the front of this novel instead of at the end. I kept thinking all the way through the book that it had to be based on experiences of real people, but since I'm not much of a historian, it would have been good to have this little refresher course as a preview - rather than a post-view. So read this - but carefully turn to the end and read the author's note first. As much as I loved Sue Monk Kidd's "The Secret Life of Bees", that's how disappointed I was with her second book, "The Mermaid's Chair". I wasn't sure I would give her another chance, but I'm glad I did. This historical novel was based on the unusual lives of abolitionist sisters Sarah and Angelina Grimke, augmented by the creation of a fictional character, a slave, named Handful. The compelling story and lyrical prose made for one of the most satisfying books I've read in a long time.
