The Lion's Share. Matthew McElligott (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

The Lion’s Share – A Tale of Halving Cake and Eating It, Too by Matthew McElligott - quite the cute foltale/introduction to fractions. For some reason for me… it felt like an awkward ending. Perhaps I just didn’t want it to end. I loved the concept and am looking forward to passing this to teachers who enjoy connecting maths and literacy together! A little ant is invited to a special dinner with the king for the first time. The king passes a cake around the table and each creature takes half of the cake until there’s only a little crumb left. The animals don’t seem to realize what they’ve done but I know students will love the idea that follows in the story! Think this will be a fun read aloud! I loved this math book turned book of manners. The Ant is a total sweetheart who just wants to impress the king, but keeps getting pushed around around by the egos of the larger animals. When she offers to bake a cake for the Lion, the rest of the animals try to show her up by offering double the amount of cakes as the last animals, with some of baking over a hundred cakes in one day! It's weirdly hilarious, with artwork that compliments the story.
