The Prisoner Of Heaven (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

It is refreshing to once again walk the familiar streets of Barcelona, with known characters doing what they do best. The Prisoner of Heaven is a much better book compared to the previous release. Once again we follow the lives of Daniel and his friends, but in this case Daniel takes a back seat and Fermín Romero de Torres takes the limelight. The story revolves around how Fermín Romero de Torres became Fermín Romero de Torres. Set against the backdrop of Barcelona under Military Regime we follow the strange and fascinating life of Fermín Romero de Torres. His origins, his identity and little secrets that slowly come to light. David Martin plays an important role in this book as well and begins to shed a little more light into the story of The Angel's Game. The writing is good as usual and the narration style felt much better compared to Angel's game. Many reviews have commented that this book struggles hard to come out of the shadow of the first book and often fails. However, noting that the first book was quite magnificent and this book contains characters from the first book and is in a way, an extension of the original itself, it is not such a bad thing. Characters feel familiar and bring warmth and thrill into the book. Old allies and enemies are matched by new ones. Perhaps this book is best read after dark and in solitude. Despite the author saying his books can be read in any order, it is best to read book 1 before reading this. Recommended to anyone who is a Carlos Ruiz Zafon fan.

Not the conclusion I was expecting. Plenty of questions have been left unanswered.

I loved this book from page one - almost as good as his Shadow of the Wind.
