The Pussy Trap Part 1: Sex, Greed, Power And Revenge (2011) - Plot & Excerpts
Caught UpI’m one of those readers that always reads the book’s synopsis right before starting it. So quickly I read over the synopsis for “The Pussy Trap,” cracked it open and got to reading. None of the names from the synopsis matched the characters I was reading about. The copy I have is an ARC (uncorrected proof) so I figured the names were changed in editing and just weren’t reflected in the copy I have (which is NOT cool either, but I’ve seen it before so I wasn’t too alarmed. Annoyed but not alarmed.). But just as I was getting used to the characters and the storylines within the first eight chapters, the rug was pulled out from under me, literally. The book completely jumped the track and headed in another direction and was suddenly based on the characters and information from the synopsis. “Huh?” you’re probably asking, because that’s most certainly what I was asking. I so did not appreciate the feeling of having my time wasted for eight chapters. I don’t know who thought that was a good idea and I place blame with both the author and publisher. I get what Capri was attempting to do with a tie in later (WAY later), but that execution was poor and should have been done in a better way than that. Had this not been a review book, put down is where it would have gone. With chapter nine readers meet the main characters, Kayson and Koko. Honestly, I was more interested in the characters and story of the first eight chapters. Kayson is that dude. The dude we all know so well because we see him in so many books today. He reads books like ‘The Art of War,’ ‘48 Laws of Power’ and plays chess. He’s fine, hazel eyes and all. And of course, he’s got a big joy stick. Koko is a member on his team making so much noise on the streets that he knows she is perfect for his next move. He needs a bad chick and Koko is that, except she’s a little rough around the edges. But that’s nothing to a man of Kayson’s caliber. Kayson takes Koko under his wings to train her and they both get more out of the deal than they expected.Kayson and Koko are over the top, larger than life characters repeatedly placed in farfetched scenarios. So much went into making the stereotypical and very cliché bad chick and bad dude, other elements were sacrificed, including believability, logic and development. And further chipping away at those elements, the book is not complete, making a sequel necessary as so much was left unanswered, unresolved or just didn’t make sense.I applaud Capri for her effort. Ultimately, “The Pussy Trap” worked against itself. There will be plenty of folks that enjoy this read, evident by the glowing reviews, but sex, violence, and drama can mask what’s lacking for only so long. Those elements have to be shored up with substance and development. For those desiring a little more depth, they unfortunately won’t find it here. The concept had potential but the execution was lacking. Had the writing been more focused, I believe this could have been a smoother and more cohesive read. Instead, “The Pussy Trap” is a very typical read similar to many books today.I won’t count Ne Ne Capri out, but I’d like to see her step it up, focus her writing and rid her writing of the formulaic.
