The Raven's Gift (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

2015 Reading Challenge 2/52: A Book a Friend RecommendedI loved this book. I have lived in the Yukon Kuskokwim Delta for about half a year now, and totally related to the new teachers in the book. Their experiences are authentic and on point. If you have ever wondered what it was like to live in rural Alaska, this gives a good representation.Moving on to the hypotheticals of the story, I was engaged and the flu epidemic raised some serious questions about our cultures that really got me thinking. The book rotates from 3 different points of time during the events, but I didn't find it confusing. I would totally recommend this book to everyone! Part thriller, part fable, part cultural critique, all wonderfully written. I was particularly hooked by the pacing of the novel. It starts where the climax starts to build, then jumps back to the beginning some six months earlier. It then alternates between the two time frames, unfolding backward from the start of the climax, then forward from the chronological beginning, until they converge and then follow the arc of the climax through to a most satisfying resolution. The protagonist, John Morgan, is expertly drawn as a character readers will want to root for, simultaneously fallible and sympathetic. This was a book club pick and I am eager to read more by this author.
