The Ring Of Solomon [Cincin Solomon] (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

This is a prequel to the Bartimaeus Sequence, however I decided I wanted to start with it. And so it happened that I met Bartimaeus, a clever and sarcastic djinn; Khaba, a magician that works for King Solomon; King Solomon himself; and Asmira, a "hereditary guard" for the Queen of Sheba. Together, their adventures and hidden agendas weave an intricate tale.I, really, strongly, disliked the ending. It felt like the end of what us foreigners, and mayhap you Americans as well, call an "American movie": it was predictable and it felt as though things were working out too well. The rest of the book was somewhere in between being okay to being mildly good. Its biggest strength was no doubt the main character and narrator, Bartimaeus. I found him very entertaining, and also unique. It is not often that a main character is neither human nor animal. In fact, this is the first time I have happened to read a book where this has occurred. It makes this book memorable, not for its fantastic plot, since that doesn't exist, but for its innovation. The Ring of Solomon was pretty special, and it definitely brought something new into literature. Still, it was not that good of a book, plot-wise. A Bartimaeus novel, although not part of the original Bartimaeus trilogy. Bartimaeus, the beloved evil djinni, is a slave to an evil wizard in King Solomon's court. Then, as the result of an exciting series of events, he finds himself bound to a young female protector of the Queen of Sheba, who orders him to help her to assassinate King Solomon and steal his magic ring before he invades Sheba - but as with all things Bartimaeus, things are not at all what they seem. Fans of this series will not be disappointed.
